Xiaomi’s Mi 8 Pro looks like an iPhone X with an in-display fingerprint sensorSeptember 19, 2018
Xiaomi continues to expand its Mi 8 phone lineup. Today, the company announced the new Mi 8 Pro and Mi 8 Lite. In China, they’re known as the Mi 8 Screen Fingerprint and the Mi 8 Youth Edition, respectively. The Pro is definitely the more interesting device, as it includes a built-in fingerprint sensor beneath the display. Other specs include:
- Snapdragon 845 processor
- Either 6GB or 8GB of RAM with 128GB of storage
- 6.21-inch, 1080 x 2248 OLED display
- Dual 12-megapixel rear-facing cameras and a 20-megapixel front-facing camera
- Face unlock in addition to fingerprint
It looks similar to the iPhone X, but instead of costing more than $1,000, the Mi 8 Pro starts at CNY 3,200 ($467) for the 6GB / 128GB model. It starts shipping in China on September 21st.
Meanwhile, the Mi 8 Lite features a 6.26-inch LCD display, Snapdragon 660 processor, 12-megapixel and 5-megapixel rear-facing cameras, a 24-megapixel front-facing camera, a rear fingerprint sensor, and a 3,350mAh battery. It starts at CNY 1,400, or $204.
Of course, the Mi 8 Pro isn’t the first phone to feature an in-display fingerprint sensor, but it’s one of the first with hopefully more to follow. OnePlus just confirmed that its next device — the OnePlus 6T — will feature an in-display sensor. The Verge’s Sam Byford also tested Vivo’s X21 phone and found that its fingerprint sensor worked well most of the time. Given that Apple typically waits a while before incorporating brand-new tech, we’re probably going to see the in-display fingerprint sensor in a Samsung device before an iPhone, so don’t get your hopes up just yet for an iPhone X model with an in-display sensor.
