Watch 48 minutes of Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay in 4KAugust 28, 2018
CD Projekt, the Poland-based game publisher responsible for The Witcher, just published 48 minutes of gameplay footage for its upcoming title Cyberpunk 2077, a futuristic sci-fi open-world game that generated a lot of buzz at this year’s E3. The demo, first streamed live on the studio’s Twitch channel and since published to YouTube in 4K, is the same behind-closed-doors footage select members of the press and notable game industry figures saw in Los Angeles in June. For a vast majority of people, however, this is the first concrete gameplay footage we’re seeing of the title.
2015’s The Witcher 3 was a groundbreaking RPG that further established CD Projekt and its Projekt Red game development division as influential open-world makers. Now, three years later, Cyberpunk 2077 is shaping up to be just as expansive and complex, but this time, it’s a take on the techno-dystopian aesthetic popularized by classics like Bladerunner and Ghost in the Shell instead of a fantasy world inspired by Eastern Europe folklore.
In the gameplay demo, we see a lot of shooting — the game is first-person, contrasted with The Witcher’s third-person viewpoint — and a lot of augmented human beings. There’s a fair amount of neon, as per usual with cyberpunk stories, but it’s too early to tell what the overall story is here. Still, it’s as solid a look at Night City, the metropolis that forms the game’s introductory setting, as we’ve ever gotten. Cyberpunk 2077 does not have a release date, but it’s scheduled to come out on the existing generation of consoles and PC, so it’s safe to say it will be playable in the next two years or so.
