Nvidia teases GeForce event with ‘spectacular surprises’ next month

Nvidia is planning to hold a GeForce event at Gamescom next month. The event will be held on August 20th and include new games, hands-on demos, and “some spectacular surprises.” Nvidia’s surprises will almost certainly involve a new GPU. Nvidia originally scheduled a talk entitled “NVIDIA’s Next Generation Mainstream GPU” at Hot Chips on August 20th, the same day as its newly announced GeForce event.

Nvidia is expected to announce its new GeForce GTX 1180 GPU, based on the Turing architecture, at this Gamescom event. While Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang recently said the next GeForce GPUs would be “a long time from now,” a Lenovo product manager mention the GTX 11 series naming and Nvidia teased its Turing architecture by commemorated Alan Turing’s birthday on Twitter last month. Images of an alleged Nvidia engineering sample for the GeForce GTX 1180 leaked last month complete with the new GDDR6 memory that Micron just started mass producing.

Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 1180 is rumored to include 3,584 CUDA cores, a clock speed between 1.6 and 1.8GHz, and up to 16GB of GDDR6 memory. All of this should mean the card is capable of playing the latest games at 4K resolution with a 144Hz refresh rate. That means the card will be a key purchase for anyone thinking about Acer or Asus’ latest 4K gaming monitors. These 27-inch panels include 144Hz refresh rates, HDR, and Nvidia’s G-Sync support, and they’re priced at $2,000 and will need a powerful GPU to take advantage of all the latest features.

Nvidia’s GeForce event kicks off at 1PM ET / 11AM PT on August 20th, and The Verge will be ready to bring you the very latest news on Nvidia’s “spectacular surprises.”
